Cori started showing an interest in water rescue when she was seven months old. Any time she saw a person in the water, she thought they needed to be rescued. When she's not in the water trying to save them, she is on the beach, staring intently at the activity before her. If she's around a pool and hears a splash, she will dive in to make sure the person is ok.
Although we don't have canine lifeguards in the US, they have them in Italy! In fact, there is a water rescue dog training school called SICS Water Rescue Dogs (SICS). Their dogs work with the Coast Guard making rescues, and they also patrol the beaches. We were lucky enough to spend five days with them, learning their techniques. Not only did they help Cori with water rescue, but they also made suggestions that helped to improve Cori's canine-assisted swimming program.
A certificate was earned for the training, but the best part was getting an endorsement from Ferruccio Pilenga and his dog Mas for our canine-assisted swimming program. Ferruccio is the founder of SICS, so it's really an honor to have his blessing!
Hopefully one day you will see Cori patrolling the beach as an official USA life guard!
