If you combine this lack of consumer awareness and history of recalls, poor manufacturing processes, and low-quality ingredients, you have a dangerous recipe. In the past, some dog food has led to dogs suffering from kidney failure, allergies, obesity, and even death. Today, pets are still being fed low-quality ingredients with chemicals and preservatives (and in some cases, even other dead pets!).
As part of the research process to raise awareness, Reviews.com spoke with top veterinarians, trainers, experts, animal scientists from respected universities to get their input. In their recently published article, the team uncovers good and bad ingredients, while applying that knowledge to review over 2,000 formulations. At the end, they were able to cut the list down to identify products with safe, high-quality ingredients.
Along the way, some valuable things were uncovered. Many popular dog food ingredients are leading to significant allergies, digestive issues, and behavior problems. There are also many harmful ingredients that pet owners are unaware of. Some of those to avoid are wheat, soy, corn, and beet pulp. Finally, there are so many choices for consumers that picking the right food in a pet store can be overwhelming.
Considering all of these issues listed above, it's important that pet owners are aware of what to feed their pets. Dogs are at the mercy of their owners, so help get the word out to ensure the health and safety of our furry friends!
